Mullingar youth selected for Atletico Madrid Academy

Mullingar soccer star Fionn Kiernan has been accepted into the Atletico Madrid Football Academy in Dublin at U10 level following intense competition in Dublin.

The talented youngster, aged 9, who has been a member of the Mullingar Athletic underage academy for the past two years, took part in his first tournament last week and Atletico Madrid emerged winners out of eight teams in Dublin. It was a fine achievement and an incredible experience for Fionn, with him and his Atletico Madrid colleagues competing in the Dublin District Soccer League (DDSL).

Fionn made a major impression at his trials during the summer, having travelled to Dublin with his dad, Mikey Kiernan. and there were 40 kids involved. The Atletico Madrid coaches explained they would be assessing all participants’ efforts over the month of July and if they made the grade, they’d be informed via email in early August, with a one-year contract for the 23/24 season the prize on offer.

“We were delighted when the email came through to offer him the contract for the academy,” explained his proud dad, Mickey, who initially put Fionn’s name forward having spotted that the initial trials were taking place. As part of the prize, Fionn was also chosen to play in the DDSL with the Spanish club's selection.

Fionn and his Atletico Madrid colleagues emerged victorious in a competition that included the likes of St Kevin’s Boys and Bohemian’s.

“It was such a proud moment for Fionn and we are all delighted for him as he is extremely dedicated to sport,” remarked Mikey.

"And I think it’s important to support our local players and showcase the fantastic sporting talent coming from Mullingar."

Aside from soccer, Fionn plays Gaelic football with the Shandonagh club and is a third class pupil at St Kenny NS, Kilpatrick. His two sisters, Kayleigh (6) and Caoimhe (12) also play Gaelic football with the Shandonagh club.

Along with parents Mikey and Ashling, the family live in Cloon Lara, Mullingar.
