Unlit greenway lights now 'a laughing stock' in Moate

The fact that public lights installed on the greenway in Moate still haven't been switched on has become "a bit of a laughing stock" in the area, according to a local councillor.

Cllr Vinny McCormack raised the issue at this month's meeting of the Athlone Moate Municipal District.

He asked for "an urgent update" from the council "as to when the lights on the greenway in Moate will be powered".

"I think we should make every effort to get this done before the clocks change at the end of the month," Cllr McCormack added.

However, District Engineer Willie Ryan said the electrical connection of the lights was entirely dependent on the ESB, and there was "not a lot" the council could do about it.

Mr Ryan added that the local authority had experienced delays with getting works carried out by the ESB in other areas also.

"We are on to (the ESB) regularly, but we can't predict when these works will be done," he said.
