Heavy rain as status yellow warning in effect

Spells of heavy rain are forecast throughout the day as a Status Yellow rain warning is in effect for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal.

Motorists are being advised of reduced visibility and dangerous road conditions. There is also a risk of localised flooding

Strong and gusty east to southeast winds at times are also forecast.

The warning expires at 8pm this evening (Wednesday)

Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees, in a moderate to fresh and gusty east to southeast wind.

Rain will be widespread across the country tonight with heavy falls bringing the chance of localised flooding. Turning drier from the south later although there will be some showers also. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in moderate southeast breezes.

Thursday will see a mix of dry spells and showers; some showers may be heavy locally. Whilst it will be mostly cloudy some bright or sunny spells will develop. Maximum temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees in a moderate southeasterly breeze.

Showers will merge to longer spells of rain on Thursday night. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with generally light winds of varying direction but a fresh northwest breeze will develop on the Atlantic coast.

Staying unsettled with spells of rain and the continued chance of flooding.

Further showers or spells of rain on Friday, heavy in places with the chance of spot flooding. Maximum temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees with moderate easterly breezes but fresh northerly breezes on the west coast. On Friday night, there will be scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle with the best chance for prolonged dry spells in the east of the country. Minimum temperatures generally ranging 7 to 10 degrees.

A mix of bright spells and heavy slow-moving showers is expected on Saturday. There will be the continued chance of localised flooding. A cooler day with highs of 10 to 13 degrees in mostly light, variable winds. Clear spells and scattered showers on Saturday night. Lowest temperatures ranging 4 to 8 degrees generally with light winds.

Current indications suggest Sunday will bring a mix of sunshine and a few slow-moving showers. However, a spell of heavy rain is possible in the south later. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in light variable breezes.
