The oldest swingers in town win four-ball tournament at Mullingar Golf Club

In a fine achievement, veteran Mullingar golfers Seamus Casey (90) and Ed Dunne (83) won the recent four-ball event at the Mullingar Golf Club, seeing off much younger opposition and proving that age is no barrier to success.

Having won the first round, the pair overcame a father and son combination, the young member playing off five and a wonderful driver. Seamus plays off 30 these days, while Ed plays to 18: they overcame their capable opponents on the 16th hole and after that embarked on a terrific run.

Having won the next three matches, Seamus and Ed were through to the final - a 90-year-old and an 83-year-old now taking on Steven Martin and Robert Jones. Despite giving away a combined number of more than 100 years to their young opponents, Seamus and Ed were two ahead after 13 holes and in a strong position.

A compelling final continued as the 14th, 15th and 16th were halved. Ed then three-putted the 17th and everything hinged on the 18th hole. Seamus was the only one with a shot at this notoriously difficult par five hole after he got to the edge of the green in four. He had to settle for a net five in the end and it was enough to give the pair victory.

Seamus is, of course, the former manager of legendary Mullingar singer and entertainer Joe Dolan, with whom he worked for 46 years.

Seamus and Ed are planning to defend their title and who would bet against this indomitable duo? Certainly they are an inspiration to younger members and indeed all at the Mullingar club.
