European Bronze medal success for Robyn Kelly

Ballynacargy boxer Robyn Kelly secured a Bronze medal at the European U22 boxing championships in Montenegro on Thursday.

In yet another fine achievement for the talented boxer, Robyn added the European medal to the national senior title she picked up in recent weeks. It is her third time to win a European medal which is outstanding for the 18-year-old.

Robyn was in Budva, Montenegro as part of the Irish team and she took on Poland’s Beata Rognalinska in the 54kg event. A nine-time Irish champion, Robyn claimed a unanimous 5-0 victory over her Polish opponent to secure the Bronze medal.

Victory qualified her for the European semi-final on Saturday and a tough encounter with Serbian boxer Sara Cirkovi, a world and European Gold medal winner. After a fine performance, Robyn had to give second best to her opponent on this occasion, but at just 18 years of age she certainly has a bright future in the sport.

Robyn is already a nine time Irish champion and continues to impress in her chosen sport, boxing out of the Ballynacargy Boxing Club where her dad, Camillus is one of her coaches. She worked tirelessly for this latest success, taking on some great sparring work with Edenderry’s Liam Morley Brereton which helped further sharpen her skills. She has also developed great power and strength which will serve her well in the coming years and there could well be even more significant medals to come.

The European Bronze medal caps off a great year for Robyn, who was recently in Poland with older brother Wayne for their first elite tournament with the Irish team. It was a fine achievement to have two family members on the national side.
