Bo-Jackson Cup event in memory of Robbie Cooney

Former Ballycomoyle footballer Robbie Cooney is to be remembered in what is a unique sporting tribute this festive season.

On Saturday December 30, Mullingar Rugby Club will play host to The Bo-Jackson Cup, a modified game in Robbie’s memory. This special match, blending the elements of rugby and Gaelic football, is being organised in memory of the local sporting star, who was a well-known and respected figure in both sports.

Robbie, a dedicated rugby player at Mullingar and a football enthusiast with Ballycomoyle, left a lasting legacy. In honour of his contributions and passion, his family, long-standing members of the rugby club, are instrumental in bringing this event to life. Managing the two teams are Rory’s Stories for Ballycomoyle and Alan ‘Buddha’ Mangan for the Mullingar Rugby Football Club.

This event extends beyond the thrill of the game; it's a collective endeavour to support mental health charities, notably Pieta House, a cause close to Robbie's heart. His untimely passing in August has galvanised the community to raise awareness and funds for mental health initiatives.

This match is more than a competition; it's a heartfelt tribute to a beloved community member, a commitment to a vital cause, and a celebration of Robbie Cooney's enduring spirit through the sports he passionately embraced. All members of the community are invited to join the the Cooney family and two clubs us at the Mullingar Rugby Club for a day of sport, camaraderie, and remembrance.

Attendees will have the opportunity to contribute through a gate collection on the match day, with the proceeds supporting Pieta House and another charity yet to be determined. This initiative reflects the community's commitment to continuing Robbie's legacy in supporting mental health causes.

Adding to the event's prestige, the match will be officiated by four-time All-Ireland hurling final referee Barry Kelly, ensuring a spirited and fair competition. The day’s events will culminate in live music at the club, fostering a sense of unity and celebration in Robbie’s honour.

All in Ballycomoyle, Ringtown, Castlepollard, Collinstown and the surrounding areas are invited to attend and support this unique day out remembering the late Robbie Cooney, a proud Ballycomoyle club man.
