'Decorative and quirky pieces' sell well at Middleton Park auction

The replica Sam Maguire Waterford Crystal Trophy, one of the many items from Middleton Park House that were auctioned last week sold for €2400.

Middleton Park House in Castletown Geoghegan was once raffled by legendary gambler Barney Curley, and its entire contents were for sale.

Antiques dealer Niall Mullen said: “The contents sold across the board, and in particular decorative and quirky pieces sold well - many to young buyers."

Other highlights of the sale included: Carson Tractor Seat, €3200; Graham Knuttle pastel, €2050; Ladies Rolex Watch, €4200; 18 Carat 4 stone diamond ring, €8000; Ralph Lauren Bed, €1450; Throne Chairs, €1300; Large set red velvet curtains, €1500

Mr Mullen added: “This was a very successful sale and we were delighted to be back in Oldcastle, which was the stomping ground of my father when he was an auctioneer.

“The contents sold across the board, and in particular decorative and quirky pieces sold well - many to young buyers.

“As a consequence of Covid, we have seen the decline of the in-person auction, which is a shame, because there’s an art to it which my father was renowned for.

“On the nights of the sale, we actually had people in the pub down the road bidding online.

“It goes to show that people are far more comfortable buying sight unseen in this era of online shopping.”
