The chairperson of Mullingar Tidy Towns, Cllr Bill Collentine, paid tribute to the brave Irishmen and Irishwomen who served Ireland during the revolutionary period. Those from Mullingar who served during the revolutionary period were especially remembered at the ceremony.

As the national flag gently flew at half mast, Cllr Collentine laid a laurel wreath in remembrance as those gathered.

That was followed by historian Jason McKevitt reading the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

The short and poignant ceremony concluded with the Irish National Flag being raised to full-mast as a minute’s silence was held in honour of all who served and died for the cause of Irish freedom.

The Mullingar 1916 Centenary Memorial was revived on Easter Monday 2017 by the 1916 Centenary Memorial Sub-committee of Mullingar Tidy Towns.

The members of the sub-committee are, Cllr Bill Collentine (chairperson), Jason McKevitt (historian), Eamon McGowan, Tomas Nally, Ger O’Connor and Willie Collentine jnr.
