Victory for Hogan and Cloney in Michael Creighton tournament

Mullingar Tennis Club notes

In spite of the stormy weather, a storm was brewing on the courts in Mullingar Tennis Club for this year's Michael Creighton tournament.

In total, 42 people descended on Mullingar Tennis Club on Saturday April 6. There were four groups which included double mens, Group A and Group B as well as double ladies, Group A and Group B. The winners of each of these mini tournaments then went into the final. The teams were mixed, in which the players of Group A were mixed with the players of Group B. These teams played mixed doubles to find the winner of this year's Michael Creighton tournament. In the end, Susan Hogan and David Cloney won this year's event.

In the Group C tournament - played whilst Group A and B final was going on - Gordon Wycherly and Katherine Raleigh won an Easter Egg and a bottle of wine for their successes. This year's Michael Creighton tournament proved a great success for everyone involved, the players, the spectators and the club as a whole.

Michael Creighton was an outstanding member of Mullingar tennis club. He devoted his life in Mullingar to the development of the club and was responsible for obtaining an extra four courts bringing our capacity to eight. He was a native of Co Galway and arrived into Mullingar to work with Westmeath Co Council as an engineer. He never actually played tennis himself but was instrumental in building the club’s reputation throughout the country. His encouragement to young players resulted in Mullingar producing some of the top rated juniors in the country. He served on every committee, showed a keen interest in all the members and thanks to his massive involvement has left us with a thriving club. We are indebted to him and run a tournament at the beginning of our tennis year in his memory.
