Troy welcomes mediation service for public liability personal injury claims

Local Fianna Fáil TD Robert Troy has welcomed the start of the Injuries Resolution Board’s mediation service for public liability personal injury claims.

Mediation can address a broader range of issues than those currently considered in the board’s assessment service, including claim value, extent of injury, and contributory negligence among others.

More particularly, mediation allows the board to consider cases where liability is not agreed. This is something that it has not been able to do previously.

The Longford Westmeath TD said: “I’m pleased that the Injuries Resolution Board has introduced mediation services for the resolution of public liability personal injury claims.

“This represents a step-change in the work of the board, as it will allow it to take on a large number of new cases. Ultimately, it should result in substantial savings.

“I pressed for such insurance reform during my time as minister of state with special responsibility for trade promotion. Mediation is a cost-effective way of resolving disputes and gives a much-needed alternative to ligation. Mediation as a service for employers’ liability personal injury claims began last December and there has already been a strong initial response. I have no doubt the response to the service for public liability personal injury claims will be the same.

“Fianna Fáil in government have prioritised reform of the insurance sector via the Action Plan for Insurance Reform, published in December 2020 and the majority of initiatives under this wide-ranging and ambitious reform agenda have now been delivered.”
