'Gaffer' calls time on almost 50 years service to Athboy
RUGBY
After dedicating almost 50 years service, Athboy RFC founding member Mick Gaffney, affectionately known as 'Gaffer', is stepping back from duties, just as the club embarks on an exciting new development of a new clubhouse.
A founding member of Athboy RFC in 1978, Mick played a crucial role in the club's establishment and affiliation with the Leinster Branch of the IRFU.
He was a key advocate for the club's development, evolution, and success from its inception.
Gaffney brought a wealth of playing experience from Dundalk RFC to the newly formed Athboy RFC, particularly in the areas of scrum and lineout expertise.
He also represented Leinster at junior level for two years in the 1960s. With Dundalk he reached the Towns' Cup semi-final four times and won the Towns' Plate in 1966 before moving to Athboy to become their star second row forward and number eight.
He served as club treasurer for many decades, providing crucial financial management and stability, especially during challenging economic times. His stewardship was instrumental in the club's acquisition and development of its permanent home in Townspark, Athboy.
Gaffney inspired players with his passion for the game, his encyclopedic knowledge of rugby, and his stories of legendary players. He fostered a love of the sport within the club.
A respected member of the wider Athboy community, Gaffney was involved in organizations such as the local Credit Union.
Recognizing the struggles of the club following the COVID-19 pandemic, Gaffney spearheaded a vital campaign, sending out an SOS to ex-players and semi-retired players, urging them to return to the pitch and contribute financially.
This effort was crucial in rebuilding the club's playing numbers and ensuring its continued viability.
Because of Gaffney's impact his legacy has seen the club win four Magee Cup titles and one Michael Dunne Cup title.
"Michael Gaffney's contributions to Athboy RFC and the broader rugby community in Leinster are truly exceptional," read a club statement.
"His dedication, knowledge, and passion have shaped the lives of countless players and have been instrumental in the growth and success of our club.
"Having recently retired from active involvement, this award would be a fitting tribute and a way for Athboy RFC to express its profound gratitude for his lifetime of service. He embodies the spirit of grassroots rugby. His legacy extends beyond the playing field, leaving a lasting impact on the community of Athboy.
