Rats, mice and wasps are the most active pests in Ireland

Research shows that rats, mice, and wasps are among the most active pests in Ireland as of 2025.

The research, carried out by pest control provider Rentokil, saw rats make up 18% of pests recorded, which was closely followed by wasps and mice, which both made up 17% each.

When it comes to mice and rats, people are being encouraged to make sure their homes and businesses are protected against potential rodent activity.

This is especially important during times of the year with wetter and colder weather, as this is when pests will seek shelter and look for food indoors.

Rodents can damage property, spread diseases, and contaminate stored goods, especially in businesses.

During the summer, wasps pose a different risk. They are common during this time of year, but they can become a problem for many.

They can be very aggressive at times, and their stings can pose a risk to families, especially. As well as this, they can nest inside properties, which makes them difficult to move, as they will become aggressive when their nests are disturbed.

Although the top three pest types in Ireland are very common, Rentokil recorded significant numbers of ants, flies, silverfish, and bed bugs.

Regional Technical Manager for Rentokil, Dr Colm Moore, said: “Our 2025 pest activity data highlight a continued trend of rodents and wasps posing significant challenges for both homes and businesses across Ireland.

“Rats and mice remain a persistent year-round issue, particularly as colder conditions drive them indoors. Wasp issues tend to peak in late summer, as they can become aggressive when their nests are disturbed or near the end of their development.

“As with all pests, early detection and preventative measures are critical, and professional pest control plays a key role in reducing health risks, property damage, and disruption.

“Additionally, while wasps may seem less concerning, their presence can disrupt daily life and require intervention quickly. Comprehensive pest management services are designed to address these issues efficiently.”
