Moate man appointed peace commissioner
Moate man Shane Lynam, has been officially appointed as a Peace Commissioner for County Westmeath.
Mr Lynam, who holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Health and Safety Management, brings a strong background in legislation, compliance, and ethical decision-making to the role.
A familiar face in local voluntary circles, Shane is a Scout leader with the 4th Westmeath Scout Group and is a volunteer trustee. Through that role, he has worked extensively with young people, helping to foster leadership, civic responsibility, and personal development.
In addition to his youth work, Shane serves as a corporal in the Reserve Defence Forces with the 2nd Artillery Regiment, based in Athlone. His military service has further reinforced his commitment to discipline, integrity, and service to the state, while also instilling a deep respect for confidentiality and impartial judgement.
Shane is known for his work with the Moate Town Team, where he serves as public relations officer. Since the establishment of the group under the Town Centre First initiative in 2023, he has played a key role in community engagement and recently led the successful development of a new town website, aimed at enhancing communication and promoting local initiatives.
Shane said: "I am honoured to take on the role of Peace Commissioner. It is a responsibility grounded in trust, fairness, and service to the community, values that I have tried to uphold throughout my career and voluntary work."
A person may need the services of a peace commissioner if they need to: make a statutory declaration or oath such as when transferring land; sign a document such as an application for a children’s passport; have an official sign a certificate or order to prove your address or identity.
