Local fire service crews doing a car accident rescue scene at Streete Vintage Show.Some 7500 people attended this year’s Streete Vintage show on Sunday to help the club celebrate 60 years of the Toyota Corolla and 80 years of the Ferguson Tractor, two vehicles that have given solid service across Ireland for generations.
Streete Vintage Club was founded in 2002 and the annual show has grown into a firm and popular fixture among vintage vehicle enthusiasts and, increasingly, the many of all ages who enjoy a good day out with a huge variety of activities.
Those activities included an all-breeds dog show in which dog owners showcased their dogs’ best abilities, music by Declan Nerney and Effie Neill as well as dancing, a fun fair, animals such as Ireland’s smallest working donkey, and the Road Safety Authority with their interactive road safety shuttle displaying the latest advances in road safety and much more.
This year’s event also showcased events such as the lawnmower racing, which kept people on their toes, local fire service crews who demonstrated a car accident rescue scene, and a vintage silage cutting demo that brought a new cutting edge to the event this year.
The main sponsor of the event was Toyota dealer, Grange Motors in Mullingar, who also had a stand at the event displaying new and old Toyotas.
Vice-chairperson Kevin Brady spoke to the Westmeath Examiner on the day: "We’re delighted to have Paul Coleman and Grange Motors Mullingar join us to celebrate this year’s 60th anniversary of the Toyota Corolla. The Corolla is one of Ireland’s favourite cars.
"We’re grateful to Grange Motors for their effort and being one of our main sponsors and coming here today. It’s been fantastic."
Other Sponsors included Westmeath County Council, Safeway Scaffolding, LR Services Granard, Whites Trailers, BD Flood, Granard Credit Union and many more.
Visitors travelled far and wide for the Streete Vintage show, said Kevin: "People have been attending from all over, we have people from England, Wales, and even one man who comes from Scotland with his camper van."
He noted how the younger generation has become more engaged with the vintage scene in recent years "We have a great variety of people and ages. What we’re finding is in the last number of years, younger people are becoming the new vintage people, and they’re coming with their own vintage cars."
He also acknowledged the importance of the Road Safety Authority and their interactive road safety shuttle display. They have been attending the event for five years said Kevin: "They’re very good at giving information on road safety and how to protect yourself by wearing seat belts, driving at a safe speed and more, and it’s important to have at an event like this – they even give further information such as displaying and showing people how to purchase the proper baby seats et cetera."
Despite the showers of rain throughout Sunday, there were enough breaks between the showers for enthusiasts to look around at all the vintage machinery and motors on display as well as soak in the great atmosphere, activities and events throughout the day.
The main event on Sunday was only part of what was a massive weekend in Streete. It began with social dancing with Ciaran Rosney on Friday evening and continued with an all-vehicle vintage run on Sunday.
