Ballinafid Multyfarnham Bunbrosna Active Retirement Group notes
Fr Paul Walsh
Multyfarnham celebrates renowned historian and scholar Fr Paul Walsh by unveiling a commemorative plaque at The Rock on November 8. Fr Paul Walsh was the parish priest in Multyfarnham from 1932 until his death in 1941. He was laid to rest in The Rock Cemetery, and it is there that the Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois, Paul Connell, will address the congregation after 11am Mass on Sunday November 8.
Fr Walsh is remembered as a diligent scholar who produced original research on many aspects of Irish history. He had some 300 journal articles published and more than 20 books, including ‘The Place names of Westmeath’.
Colm O’Lochlainn stated. ‘There never lived any Irish historian who had a fuller or more intimate knowledge of the history of Ireland, during the years of the Norman Conquest to the Williamite wars.’
All are encouraged to come to The Rock, Multyfarnham on November 8, after 11 Mass in St Nicholas to learn more local and national history, and see the plaque dedicated to this scholarly man, Paul Walsh.
World Peace
The first Saturday of each month, including this Saturday, Nov 7 at 2.30pm, a small gathering of people meet in Gaine Park and contemplate the enduring struggle for World Peace. All are welcome.
Open meeting
On Tuesday, Nov 17 from 10.30-12.30 in Multyfarnham Community Centre. Come along and meet up with club members, and friends. Surprises are in store so please schedule this meeting in your diary. Open meetings are scheduled every few months to give an opportunity for members to meet and connect, collaborate, and socialise as they enjoy refreshments. This way there is an exchange of ideas and consider suggestions. New members are encouraged to take part; refreshments will be served, plus a raffle.
Athens Marathon
Good luck to Emma Harvey, who is going to the home of Marathon running and taking on the Athens Marathon on Sunday November 8 on a course tracing the historic original route from the town of Marathon to the finish line inside the historic Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. We are so proud of you Emma and the splendid example you are to the running community and more importantly, your family. Good luck in Athens and send loads of pictures.
