Improvements to Carer’s Allowance means test

The Carer’s Allowance has undergone a significant improvement to the means test which will see the weekly income disregard.

The change, which came into effect last week, will see Carer’s Allowance increased from €625 to €1,000 for a single person, and from €1,250 to €2,000 for a couple.

This means thousands of carers across the country will qualify for the payment for the first time, while many existing recipients will receive a higher rate of payment.

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism, and Employment, Peter Burke, said carers in Westmeath will benefit from the improvements: “Fine Gael has long called for improvements to the Carer’s Allowance means test, so I am delighted to see these changes now in place,” he said.

Carers provide personal, physical, or emotional support to someone who cannot fully manage on their own due to illness, disability, or frailty. Minister Burke said the refinement will have a real impact on their lives: “The changes will ensure more carers can access the support they deserve, while many existing recipients will receive increased payments.

“With more than 3,000 people in Westmeath supported through carers’ payments, we know just how important these supports are for families across our county.

“These payments recognise the invaluable work carers do and provide greater financial security for those giving that care.”

He recognised the value of the role: “Carers make an extraordinary contribution every day, often putting the needs of loved ones before their own. Fine Gael has always prioritised supporting people with disabilities, older people and those with additional care needs, and that means supporting the family members who care for them.”

Minister Burke said people should check their eligibility: “I would encourage anyone who thinks they may now qualify for Carer’s Allowance, or who believes they may be entitled to a higher payment, to contact their local Intreo Centre or visit gov.ie for more information.”
