Treasures under the hammer at Ushers

Bidders and collectors from across the country are preparing to converge on John Street, Kells this month as Usher’s Auction Rooms has officially announced its upcoming premier sale, scheduled for Monday, July 20.

The long-standing, family-owned business is currently spearheaded by prominent antiques auctioneer and valuer Robert Usher. Alongside his family, Robert continues to carry on the esteemed legacy of the late founder, Oliver Usher, maintaining the firm’s reputation as one of the county’s leading fine art and antique auction houses.

This July sale promises an extraordinary, varied collection of 1,200 lots of antiques and collectibles. According to Robert Usher, the event represents a spectacular general sale with an expansive variety that guarantees something for every taste and budget.

The extensive catalogue features: Georgian and Victorian furniture, desks, and high-quality carpets; Irish and English silver, fine jewellery, and collectible coins; Waterford glassware, elegant dinner and tea sets, and antiquarian books; unique exterior pieces, including garden furniture and vintage advertising signage.

“This is a great general sale with something for everyone,” Robert Usher said of the sale, “In-person viewing at The Auction Rooms is highly recommended to fully appreciate the quality on offer.”

Adding to the excitement is a major clearance from the historic Dardistown Castle, alongside several highly unusual, quirky items. History enthusiasts will be drawn to a large copper ham pot (Lot 988) bearing the official Powerscourt House mark, as well as a rare pencil sketch of Maurice Wingfield, brother of the 7th Viscount Powerscourt (Lot 583).

Other notable highlights crossing the block include: Lot 423 a brass stag and doe figures (estimated price between €100 and €200), Lot 451, a large Powers whiskey advertising mirror ( €500–€900), Lot 454 a 19th-Century cased taxidermy songbirds (€300–€600), and Lot 873: and antique travelling triptych of Madonna and child (€300–€600).
