WAHS host guided tour around Rathconnell Hill on Saturday
On Saturday August 15 next at 3pm Westmeath Archaeological and Historical Society will host its first Heritage Week event, a fully guided tour of Rathconnell Hill by Jonathan Raleigh, who has carried out much research on the site.
Seamus O’Brien will also talk about the use of the stables associated with Rathconnell Court to house old and infirm men during the Famine.
Jonathan will explore the many monuments on the hill including, barrows, a medieval church, castle sites and the ruined Georgian mansion called Rathconnell Court.
He will also explore the origin of the townland name and the hills ancient connections with Ruba Conaill, a fort that once belonged to the King of Meath. That fort may still exist atop the hill, hidden in plain sight.
This is an outdoor event so suitable footwear and rain gear are necessary; it is not suitable for those with mobility issues.
