'Remarkable' end to 26-county marathon challenge for Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund at former school
There was a "remarkable" end to a 26-county marathon challenge in aid of the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund, as runner John Healy completed the feat at Ashling's former secondary school Sacred Heart School in Tullamore last weekend.
It was a particularly special occasion, as the school also launched their AstroTurf fundraising campaign for “Páirc Ashling.”
John's marathon challenge began in January, as he took on the incredible challenge of running 26 marathons in 2026 in Ashling’s memory and in aid of the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund.
On Sunday, September 20, John set off on completing his 26th marathon starting at the Murphy household at 9am.
John was led by Ashling’s father, Ray, and followed by committee members, Freda and Martin by motorcycle to the Sacred Heart School (SHS), Tullamore by 10.20am where he completed his final marathon.
John ran approximately 101 laps of the SHS track alongside running club friends and students who joined him in relays, finally crossing the finish line at 1.30pm.
"What makes his undertaking even more meaningful is the way he carried Ashling’s name and her legacy with him every step of the way. Wearing her jersey at every marathon, he has brought Ashling’s memory all across Ireland and further afield to London and Arizona," a post to the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund page read.
"He has helped ensure that people remember her and that her legacy continues to inspire others, while also raising vital funds through the generosity of so many people. We are truly grateful to John for his kindness and dedication to this challenge."
The family has thanked all who supported John along the way and to the Sacred Heart School Parents Association who made a generous donation in lieu of John’s fundraiser towards the memorial fund.
The day also marked the launch of “Páirc Ashling”, an AstroTurf pitch fundraising campaign with a target of €220,000.
Sacred Heart School held a special place in Ashling’s life, where she spent six years learning, growing and creating lasting memories.
"We know what a positive difference “Páirc Ashling” would make to the school & wider community. This pitch would not only provide students with a space to play, to develop their skills, to build friendships, and to experience the many benefits of sport and physical activity."
Ashling’s dad, Ray, noted in his addressing speech at the launch that the park will “provide a safer place for women to exercise”.
