Walk Wednesdays lead to Active Schools flag

After months of staying active, the pupils of St Kenny NS were able relax last week, even if it just for the duration of their Active Schools flag-raising ceremony.
They worked hard to earn the flag, and much to the excitement of the children, the hoisting took place on Friday September 25 led by the members of the Active-Schools Committee.
Principal, Proinsias Ó Fearghail said: “It is a fantastic day for St Kenny National School here and represents a lot of work on behalf of staff and students. We are delighted to have the opportunity to do this and to provide an inclusive and active environment for all the children in the school.”
It was a busy time at the Kilpatrick school while they were working on the flag project, thanks to sixth class teacher and Active Schools coordinator, Ciaran Boyce.
Throughout the week, the children took part in Energetic Tuesdays, Walk Wednesdays and Funky Fridays.
The aim of the programme is to encourage all the children to stay active in different ways.
“It gives a chance for every child to have the opportunity to be physically active throughout the day and not just reward people who are winning sports,” said Mr Boyce. “We try to celebrate all the different things that the children are achieving.”
Like most schools, St Kenny NS have lots for pupils to get involved in, and the dedicated members of the Active-Schools Committee are leading the way. From skipathons to standing desks, the school found unique ideas to keep their fitness up, and St Kenny NS was one of the schools chosen to participate in part of the Mullingar Half Marathon this year! Pupils from fifth and sixth class trained at school in the weeks leading up to the St Patrick’s Day event, and the kids ran the last 750m of the race to cross the official finish line. The school also had hurling, camogie and football sessions with Westmeath GAA.
