Coláiste Mhuire ‘still pinching ourselves’

Westmeath Examiner Community and Sports Awards

Coláiste Mhuire are "still pinching ourselves at the thought about what happened Paddy’s Day," and now they have earned another achievement under their belt, by winning team of the year at the Westmeath Examiner Community and Sports Awards. Coach, Dean McNicholas, spoke for the team, with his proud players standing shoulder to shoulder behind him alongside their two other coaches Brian Murtagh and Matthew Kearney.

Dean McNicholas described the huge dedication the players put in, from 7.00AM training before school to trekking to challenge and away matches with some of the team even balancing their Leaving Cert studies. "The credit goes to the lads behind me. We were lucky to be a part of a really special group and the footballers they are; they are even better lads."

"The lads that left this year did really well in the Leaving Cert, and I don’t know how they balanced it," he said.

The team felt huge support from their community which helped spur them on to bring home the All-Ireland title. "There was huge sacrifice as well by everyone, not just the team and management but the school and community too. Along the road everyone was giving a phone call for what type of help they could give, and it was greatly appreciated." No doubt the training will be starting again soon but knowing that they are historic Leinster Champions of Ireland is a really special achievement for the team.
