Times changed for Westmeath football finals

The throw-in times for this Sunday's Westmeath junior and intermediate football finals at TEG Cusack Park have been changed.

The decision was taken at the Westmeath Competitions Control Committee meeting held last night (Tuesday).

The Westmeath Junior 1 Football Championship final between St Joseph’s and The Downs will now start at 1.15pm, with the Intermediate Football Championship final (Milltown vs Shandonagh) now set for a throw-in time of 3.15pm.

Both finals were originally scheduled to start half an hour later than those times but with the clocks going back in the early hours of next Sunday morning, it is a sensible move to amend the times.

Westmeath GAA fixtures secretary Peter Collins said that "due to the forecasted bad weather conditions and the clocks changing this weekend, a decision has been made to adjust the throw-in times for Sunday’s games".

"We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience these changes may cause. However, the safety and welfare of our players, officials and supporters must remain our top priority. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation and ask that clubs ensure all players, management and supporters are made aware of the revised times," Collins added.

If either final ends in a draw, there will be no extra-time played; instead, it will go straight to a replay.

St Joseph's are contesting their third junior final in a row, having lost to Ballinagore and Castletown-Finea/Coole/Whitehall over the past two years. On the other hand, The Downs' second team will be looking to add the junior crown to the senior and minor titles the club has already secured.

In the intermediate final, Milltown are aiming to win their first title at this grade, while Shandonagh are trying to go one better than last year when they narrowly lost to Tubberclair. Milltown were defeated by Garrycastle in the 2024 final (after a replay) so this Sunday's eagerly awaited decider features the two sides who lost out in the last two finals.

On Saturday, Caulry and St Mary’s Rochfortbridge will be hoping to make up for disappointing campaigns for their first teams when they meet in the Junior 2 Football Championship final (TEG Cusack Park, 2pm).

Meanwhile, Moate Community School and Marist College, Athlone are both in action in the Leinster Schools SF 'A' Championship this week.
