Restoration of Castlepollard Market House begins
The first stage of transformation work on the refurbishment and redevelopment of the historic Castlepollard Market House has officially begun.
The main contractor for the project is due to be appointed in November, subject to the completion of the tender process and final departmental approvals.
Local councillor Alfie Devine has welcomed the progress, noting that preliminary works have already started on what he described as “a long-awaited project” for the area.
“It’s going to enhance the whole square,” Cllr Devine told the Examiner.
“Hopefully the contractor will be on site before Christmas.
“There is a whole new square enhancement, and public realm enhancement as part of the overall scheme. There’s going to be a lot of money spent on it.”
The landmark building, located in the heart of The Square, is set for a new lease of life following extensive groundwork by Castlepollard Local Development, with support from several agencies.
Funding for the substantial extension and restoration was originally announced in November 2022, paving the way for the extensive background preparation now reaching fruition.
Steeped in history, the Market House was constructed around 1815. It was later rebuilt in 1926 after being burnt to the ground by the Black and Tans a few years prior.
Over the last two centuries, the versatile building has served the community as a market house, courthouse, town hall, fire station, library, and even as a temporary morgue following the tragic Castlepollard Massacre.
Once the modern renovation works are completed, this vital piece of Westmeath heritage will serve a new purpose as a tourism and community hub.
