Marathon challenge in memory of much-loved Westmeath woman

Two friends and work colleagues took on the Dublin Marathon last Sunday, October 25, in memory of their late friend Louise Elliott, while raising funds for North Westmeath Hospice.

Mary Goldsberry and Nicole Scally laced up their running shoes for the 26.2-mile challenge to honour Louise, who sadly passed away. A keen runner herself, Louise was also a passionate supporter of North Westmeath Hospice, making the fundraising effort a fitting tribute to her life and the causes she held close to her heart.

Mary said they were compelled to honour Louise: “She was a big part of our working day life as well as community life. She was a big character and it's a huge loss to everybody.”

Through a GoFundMe campaign, Mary appealed to the public to support their marathon challenge, and said all donations are going towards North Westmeath Hospice: “I got the consent of her family before we set up the GoFundMe page. They were very appreciative of the proposal.”

The pair hope their efforts will help continue Louise’s support for the hospice and contribute to the vital work it carries out in the community.

The fundraiser had surpassed €2,900 before the marathon took place (and was at more than €3,000 by Tuesday afternoon): “It's incredible, I'm blown away to be honest, really blown away,” Mary said of the support.

“It's a very good cause, the North Westmeath Hospice.

“The fact it's for the palliative care element of the North Westmeath Hospice is a big factor too.”

Their participation in the Dublin City Marathon provided an opportunity to celebrate Louise’s love of running, remember a cherished friend and colleague, and support a service that meant so much to her.

Donations can still be made through Mary Goldsberry’s GoFundMe fundraising page.
