Specialist cleaning brings fresh look to Mullingar Cathedral

The exterior of Mullingar’s iconic Cathedral of Christ the King is undergoing a major cleaning and conservation project, helping to restore the appearance of one of Westmeath’s most recognisable landmarks.

The work is being carried out by Power Washing Ireland in collaboration with heritage conservation specialists Kelbuild, using specialist cleaning techniques designed to protect the cathedral’s historic stonework and architectural features.

Rather than relying on conventional high-pressure washing, the teams are using a softwashing approach and carefully controlled stone-cleaning methods to remove accumulated dirt and staining while safeguarding the building’s exterior.

The project covers the cathedral’s impressive stonework, twin towers, copper dome and other architectural details, which have made it a defining feature of the Mullingar skyline.

Given the scale and height of the building, specialist access equipment has been essential. Long-reach platforms and truck-mounted machinery, including a 38-metre platform, have been used to reach upper windows, cladding and other difficult-to-access areas.

The work has attracted attention locally, with Power Washing Ireland sharing photographs and updates showing the scale of the operation and the equipment required to complete the job.

Despite the extensive work taking place outside, the cathedral has remained open to the public throughout the cleaning process, allowing worshippers and visitors to continue accessing the building.

The project also comes amid wider improvements at the cathedral, including the installation of an updated heating system, reflecting ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the historic building.

As one of Mullingar’s most prominent landmarks, the Cathedral of Christ the King holds an important place in the town’s religious, architectural and cultural life.

The careful approach to cleaning and conservation aims to enhance its appearance while protecting the materials and features that contribute to its distinctive character.
