Fore Abbey tour guides would help local businesses - Jones

There are tour guides at other Office of Public Works managed attractions such as Loughcrew and Trim Castle, says Cllr David Jones in making his case for guides at Fore Abbey.

He has reiterated his call, emphasising the potential benefits for local tourism and asked why the OPW cannot facilitate a similar service in Fore.

Speaking at the July meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad, he also proposed that incorporating audio-visual technology into guided tours could significantly enhance the visitor experience, particularly in rural communities.

He hopes his idea will be considered for future development in tourism plans for Westmeath, as it would create a deeper appreciation of the rich heritage of north Westmeath.

Cllr Jones has formally written to the OPW and Minister Kevin Boxer Moran urging them to consider establishing a dedicated tour guide service at Fore Abbey during the seasonal months.

He believes that guiding tourists through the historic site would have a positive ripple effect on local businesses and cafes, boosting footfall and making Fore that bit more attractive to visit.

Cllr Jones has been actively involved in numerous tourism initiatives over the years, including the successful upgrade of tourism signage in his hometown of Delvin and he states that he remains committed to promoting north Westmeath’s heritage and tourism potential.

He is currently awaiting a response from the OPW and the minister, and remains hopeful that a tour guide, or two, will be employed in Fore.
