The former school building in Kinnegad is now the home of the new library.

New library in Kinnegad to open in coming weeks

The new library in Kinnegad is to open in the coming weeks, according to local councillor, Denis Leonard.

He said library staff will start to move in books and equipment next week.

“The contractors are putting the final touches to the inside of the building, the grounds and the road at the front, which reopens today.

Kinnegad will be an open library, meaning that those who are registered and members can use it all the time. The system for gaining entry, and accessing books and materials is a modern computer set-up. The facility includes community and learning spaces, a garden area, and a kitchen.

Upstairs, accessible by lift, are three large classrooms and the LWETB office.

“This library, education centre, community space has been years in the consultation, funding, planning and development stages,” said Cllr Leonard, “and in a few weeks it will be a lovely centrepiece in the town and an excellent use of the old national school.

“The building is steeped in the history of Kinnegad, mixing the old and the modern.”

He said he will have an official opening date after the council meeting on Monday.
