Members of the Midlands Uilleann pipers group invite locals to join them on Saturday next, November 1.

Local pipers group to mark International Uilleann Day

Midlands Uilleann Pipers are holding events in Mullingar to mark International Uilleann Piping Day, Saturday November 1, a worldwide event to celebrate a unique Irish traditional instrument.

Midlands Uilleann pipers are a group of musicians (mostly pipers) who meet every month to play and learn pipes and traditional Irish music together.

The events begin in Mullingar Library (11.30am-1.30pm), where musicians or budding musicians are welcome to go along and hear the pipes.

There will be recitals from local uilleann pipers, and an opportunity to try the pipes and get a feel for the instrument. Tutors and pipers will be on hand to give advice and answer questions about how to begin uilleann piping. The event would be ideal for anyone who may have and interest in piping but don’t know how to begin, and would be especially helpful for parents who may have younger children interested in beginning uilleann piping.

In the afternoon, pipers will gather in Daly’s bar (3-6pm) for a piping session. All musicians are welcome to join in.

The Irish midlands region once had a strong uilleann piping tradition of both players and pipemakers, and Midlands Uilleann pipers are proud to continue that heritage and hope you can join them in this worldwide annual celebration of Irish piping.
