LEADER announce funding for digital optimisation projects

Community and voluntary groups, as well as youth clubs and organisations, are being invited to make submissions for support to develop their online presence.

Westmeath Community Development on behalf of the Local Action Group and Westmeath Local Community Development Committee is seeking expressions of interest for digital optimisation projects under the theme of rural infrastructure and social inclusion, with sub-themes of optimising digital connectivity and rural youth.

The LEADER Programme has been instrumental in supporting communities and rural dwellers across Westmeath over the last 30 years through identified initiatives that seek to address locally identified needs and challenges.

The Local Development Strategy (LDS) for the 2023-2027 LEADER Programme outlines the aims and objectives for the county under the specific themes that reflect the needs of rural Ireland including economic measures, social inclusion actions as well as environmental initiatives.

The National Broadband Plan is currently being rolled out across Westmeath, addressing the critical need for high-speed broadband in all communities. The goal is to ensure comprehensive digital connectivity across all parts of Westmeath, now recognised as a fundamental component of the county's growth.

In addition to improving infrastructure, there is also a need to develop digital skills and literacy. By fostering these capabilities, communities will be better positioned to benefit from digitalisation thus enhancing their economic and social potential.

Working from home and the establishment of digital hubs too have also become an integral part of life in Westmeath. Ensuring that rural residents are not left behind in the digital era is critical, as public services, financial transactions, and employment opportunities increasingly rely on online platforms.

Rural youth face several challenges, including limited access to facilities, a lack of activities beyond sports, and a shortage of social opportunities, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

Young people by their nature are curious and play a huge role in embracing digitalisation and bringing new concepts to their local communities.Through digital supports we can support rural youth in, fostering youth engagement, and building leadership capacity, enabling them to become more active members of their communities.

The LEADER Programme is now providing support to communities, clubs and youth organisations who wish to undertake projects in this area. Projects ideas and examples may include the following:

Small scale equipment such as in-building boosters and indoor cabling to ensure a reliable connection for end users as well as mobile phone repeaters used to improve mobile phone coverage in a community facility. IT equipment including desks, PCs, laptops, monitors, large screens, easy to use tablets for the elderly. Podcast equipment –not exclusive to include computer, usb microphone, XLR microphone, dynamic microphone, pop filters, podcasting headphones, windscreen.

Feasibility studies focused around innovative solutions to improve broadband/fibre access for communities. Training on digital platforms (minimum 10 people to be trained per project). Website creation & maintenance training.

Other innovative proposals relating to digital connectivity may also be considered subject to eligibility.
