Local businesses take Zero Tolerance pledge
Éist – Saying No To Silence, in partnership with Zero Tolerance Midlands, have announced that the businesses operating from Agora Suites, Mullingar, alongside the team at Agnes Burke Hairdressing, became the first businesses in the region to officially take the Zero Tolerance Pledge, last Thursday, January 15.
Éist say it represents a significant step forward in creating safer, more inclusive and respectful workplaces and communities across the region.
The pledges follow a presentation delivered by Éist to Westmeath County Council in December 2025, where they received the unanimous support of the elected members.
In the coming weeks, Westmeath will become the first county in Ireland to take the Zero Tolerance Pledge as part of the Zero Tolerance Midlands Campaign.
Hazel Behan, co-founder and chairperson of Éist, said the commitment sends a message that abuse, harassment and violence will not be tolerated, and it is hoped the step will inspire other counties across Ireland to follow Westmeath’s lead.
“Change happens when communities come together. Seeing local businesses step forward so visibly shows what is possible when we choose to act rather than remain silent,” she added.
Éist director Brogan Gallagher added: “This moment is about leadership and action. When businesses publicly take the Zero Tolerance Pledge, they send a powerful message that harmful behaviour will not be ignored and that respect and safety are non-negotiable.”
Co-founder and secretary Bairbre Kelly said the pledge “is a significant step not just for Mullingar, but for the midlands as a whole”.
“It demonstrates that workplaces can be proactive, informed and compassionate in addressing sexual harassment and violence.”
Agnes Burke, owner of Agnes Burke Hairdressing, said: “As a business owner, I believe we have a responsibility to create a safe and respectful space for both staff and clients. Taking the Zero Tolerance Pledge is our way of standing clearly and publicly against harassment and abuse.”
Stephen Burke, owner of Agora Suites, agreed and added: “Agora Suites is proud to be part of this important initiative. Supporting Zero Tolerance aligns with our values as a business hub and reflects the kind of professional and inclusive environment we want to foster.”
Éist – Saying No To Silence are survivor-led and work with victims and survivors of sexual and gender based violence. Alongside one-to-one support, they provide educational workshops, raise awareness, provide advocacy and call for community action. They are committed to breaking the silence around sexual violence, supporting cultural change, and empowering individuals, workplaces and communities to take a clear and public stand against all forms of sexual and gender based violence.
The Zero Tolerance Pledge is a public commitment by organisations, businesses and institutions to foster environments that are safe, respectful and free from sexual and gender based violence. By taking the pledge, organisations commit to challenging harmful behaviours, supporting those affected, and promoting a culture of dignity and accountability.
Looking ahead
Éist – Saying No To Silence and Zero Tolerance Midlands hope this commitment will inspire other businesses and organisations across the midlands and beyond to take the pledge and play an active role in building safer communities.
