New working committee for BMB Active

Last Thursday the first meeting of the newly elected working committee met and ‘took care of business’ by digging in and forming subcommittees to, for instance, review the constitution, update the code of ethics and other essentials required in order to maintain the high standards set since the onset of this organisation.

There was also an opportunity to plan some of the fun stuff, the life enhancing activities BMB Active is known for. To that end, the Culture Vultures activities will be guided by the organisers Mary B Daly, Rosemary Eger, and Eddie Newman. The social quiz organisers include Padraig Flynn, Joe Scally and Rosemary Eger, the day outings, activities, mini breaks will be spearheaded by Bridie Hoye with Marian Mooney and Teresa Bourke. Maureen Gaynor will organise the ever popular raffles that people enjoy at BMB Active events.

Given that BMB Active continue to work on being responsive to the members ideas, and suggestions, please discuss your ideas with the Committee members.

Mary B Daly, the BMB Active delegate to Active Retirement Ireland, encouraged members to attend the AGM of Active Retirement Ireland (ARI) in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone on Tuesday June 23. Mary stated that ARI is the largest society representing older citizens in Ireland and that BMB Active, with more than 400 members constitutes one of the biggest ARAs. While campaigning for many issues affecting the older population, Mary reported the recent focus group who petitioned the government on the availability of the shingles virus vaccine. Currently, the combined cost of the two injections needed is approximately €500, for those who can afford that expenditure.

That price acts as a barrier for this important health safeguard against shingles and at the same time can fortify against Alzheimer’s disease in 20% of the population. BMB Active are grateful that action is underway to address this concern.

Some BMB Active members are also carers of family members who need extra help and support. Family Carers Ireland are conducting the State of Caring 2026 Survey. It will help create better understanding of the experiences of family carers. This will in turn help to shape better policies and decisions that affect families. It usually takes about 30 minutes to complete this survey. If you are a family carer it would help if you took part. You can do so at surveymonkey.com/r/StateOfCaring2026, at home in your own time.

If you prefer, you can complete the survey by phone by ringing Joanne Murphy, research officer on 0860326187. You can also ask Joanne for a paper copy to be posted to your home. You can also email jmurphy@familycarers.ie.

The survey stays open until Friday March 20.

To the family and friends of Andrew Nally, Green View, Multyfarnham. Andy passed away on February 11, peacefully at his home in Renvyle, Galway. He was predeceased by his sister Kathleen and his father Jimmy Nally. He will be sadly missed by his mother, Mary, his daughter Katie, his brothers Mark and Seamus, and his sisters Josie, Celine, and Sinead. Mary Nally is an exceedingly popular member of BMB Active who typically enjoys the mini breaks and days out. We always enjoy her banter and singing. Hopefully Mary’s indomitable spirit will help her and her family as they come to terms with this loss.
