Mullingar Elite Boxing Club at Neilstown Celtic Warrior Cup

Mullingar Elite Boxing Club had a fantastic weekend of boxing in the Neilstown Celtic Warrior Box Cup. We entered nine boxers ranging from 12 to 16 years old.

Ben Mongan had two fantastic contests beating a Dublin champion in his first contest but lost his second fight against this year’s Leinster champion, a year older. Joey Nevin lost his first fight on Friday, but left everything in the ring.

Saturday was a better day for team Elite. Ronan Charles was too strong for his Neilstown opponent, stopping him in style in the first round. Ollie Rowley was class in his first fight, winning by a unanimous decision. Patrick McDonnell, only boxing six months, faced a top kid and pushed him all the way, just losing out on a 2-1 split decision.

Christy Nevin won this box cup last year and was not giving it up. He dominated his opponent. Ollie Rowley had a toe to toe battle with a top kid from Carlow; both lads never stopped throwing from the first bell. Ollie’s hand was raised at the end of the bout. Max McCormack rounded the day off with a master class win.

On Sunday we had seven in the final: Ricco McDonnell, only boxing six months as well, came up against the Munster champion. He gave his all but had to settle for silver. John Joe Nevin was in the ring but his opponent didn’t show up so he won gold by walkover.

Ronan Charles was next against the hometown favourite. Ronan out-classed and out-worked his opponent to win by unanimous decision. Ollie Rowley was next in another toe-to-toe battle, Ollie winning the first two rounds with his opponent finishing strong in the last. Ollie’s name was called the winner after three great rounds. Next in was Christy Nevin: Christy faced a very good opponent but his relentless pressure got to his opponent and his hand was raised after three great rounds.

Max McCormack was next in what a fight both lads went at it straight from the bell. Max was dropped with a body shot, but took his count and went straight back at his opponent and few counts could of been given to his opponent, but after three top rounds, Max was declared the winner.

Paddy Nevin was last up for us and he was in a hurry to be crowned champion. He dominated his opponent from the first bell, forcing a first round stoppage. Overall, the club came away with six gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

Well done to all our boxers and a big thanks to all the coaches and parents who helped out over the weekend.
