Under 18s to be banned from e-scooters, as Government announces strict rules

The Government have announced strict rules in relation to the use of e-scooters, including a ban for anyone under the age of 18.

High-visibility jackets and helmets will now be mandatory for all users of e-scooters, along with a complete ban on sales to under-18s.

The government remains open to a complete ban at the moment. An Garda Síochána is looking to mirror the UK’s system, granting further legal protections when pursuing e-bikes and e-scooters.

One of the key changes will come later in the year, as legislation will be introduced to treat e-scooters as mechanically propelled vehicles. Making them subject to licensing and registration, like any other vehicle.

This will come as a welcome change for An Garda Síochána. The Garda Commissioner noted a significant increase in operations connected to e-scooters.

As well as this, data from Children’s Health Ireland showed a frightening pattern of serious injuries caused by e-scooters. Admissions for traumatic brain injuries have increased by half over the last year.
