Under 18s go free for the month of August to heritage sites across the country

The Government and the Office of Public Works have announced that for the month of August, admission to heritage sites across the country will be free for under-18s.

This new initiative aims to encourage young people and their families to explore Ireland’s cultural and historical heritage, while removing financial barriers.

This will run in conjunction with the current free-under-12 scheme, which is being extended from August 1 to August 31. Free admission for all children under the age of 18 is only applied when accompanied by an adult.

Free admission applies to all fee-paying OPW sites, with the exception of Kilmainham Gaol and Brú na Boinne.

Tickets for many sites will have to be purchased online, and available sites include Barryscourt Castle, Glebe Gallery, Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, Emo Court, Céide Fields, Ilnacullin - Garinish Island and Castletown House.

Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran, praised the initiative.

He said: “I am delighted that all under-18s will once again enjoy free entry to OPW heritage sites this August. Whether it’s exploring ancient monuments, visiting historic houses, taking part in interactive tours or discovering Ireland’s cultural heritage first-hand, this initiative offers young people a fun and memorable way to connect with history, nature and culture over the summer holidays.
