World Champion Ella wins in Abu Dhabi
Mullingar mixed martial arts fighter Ella Carey recently secured a World Champion title when she claimed gold in Abu Dhabi.
Fighting in the capital city of the United Arab Emirates Ella competed in the Youth D -44kg category of the IMMAF Youth World Championships.
Last Monday week the 12yrs old stood tall on the podium after two dominant displays on the mats. She delivers a flawless performance to secure her gold medal.
Ella’s journey to the top of the podium was described as “nothing short of spectacular”. She navigated a gruelling bracket with two elite fights.
Her semi-final saw her take on an Ukrainian fighter. Ella’s technical and disciplined execution of craft saw her take a dominant unanimous decision victory to secure her place in the final. Her final bout was against a Lebanese opponent. Ella closed out the tournament in clinical fashion, securing the World Title with a lightning-fast armbar in just 41 seconds.
On social media the Irish Mixed Martial Arts Association, who coordinated Ireland’s team said: “Becoming a World Champion is the ultimate reward for the countless hours of training, sacrifice, and dedication Ella has put in at her home club.
“We are incredibly proud of her achievement and the professional manner in which she represented the tricolour on the world stage.”
This was the first gold for Ireland in the tournament. Ella is a member of the Relentless Martial Arts, the Mullingar martial arts club.
Relentless recently won the coveted Top Academy and Top Affiliation trophies at the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) championships held in Dublin.
Relentless Martial Arts facilitates training in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Muay Thai, wrestling and K1 kickboxing. The club caters for complete beginners through to elite competitors, with a coaching philosophy built around long-term development rather than immediate competition.
Head coach Alan McCormack and his wife, Danni, lead the coaching team. While Alan specialises in Muay Thai, Danni teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Danni is a former professional mixed martial artist, she competed internationally in both Bellator and Invicta FC, where she became Invicta Strawweight Champion.
The club took to social media to say: “Ella joins the elite group of Relentless World Champions after impressively winning both her IMMAF World Championships fights. What a great day for Mullingar and for Ireland, we are so proud of you Ella.”
