Public invited to view latest plans for N4 Mullingar to Longford project

The latest plans for the proposed N4 Mullingar to Longford (Roosky) project is on public display today (Monday), with members of the public invited to attend a Public Information Event at Mullingar Park Hotel from 2pm to 8pm.

Westmeath County Council and Longford County Council, supported by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), are hosting a series of events this week as the major road project progresses through Phase 3 – Design and Environmental Evaluation.

The 52km section of the N4 between Mullingar and Roosky is currently a single carriageway and passes through or close to Ballinalack, Rathowen, Edgeworthstown, Longford and Newtownforbes. It is the largest unimproved section of the N4/M4 corridor.

More than 23,500 vehicles use the route each day, which has more than 500 junctions and direct accesses. Between 2008 and 2024, more than 215 personal injury collisions were recorded, including 20 fatalities and 41 serious injuries.

The project aims to improve road safety, journey reliability and connectivity between Mullingar, Longford and Roosky, while reducing traffic through settlements along the route.

Plans also include opportunities for dedicated walking, wheeling and cycling routes, with the project intended to support sustainable transport and improve tourism connectivity between Ireland’s Ancient East, Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and the Wild Atlantic Way.

The project team has been carrying out engineering and environmental surveys since late 2025 and has recently begun meeting directly with affected landowners to discuss the evolving design.

Further public information events will take place at Edgeworthstown Library tomorrow, Tuesday, from 2pm to 8pm, and at the Longford Arms Hotel on Wednesday, September 30, from 2pm to 8pm.

Project information, including interactive mapping, will also be available online through the N4 Mullingar to Longford project website.

Members of the public can submit feedback to the project team as the design continues to develop.
