Westmeath's Peter aiming to plot The Downs' downfall

Westmeath senior football champions The Downs begin their bid for Leinster club success tomorrow (Sunday), but Westmeath's Peter Tormey will be on the opposing side with Longford’s Clonguish.

Tormey had a coaching role, as part of the management team led by Dom Corrigan, as Clonguish defeated Killoe Young Emmets in the Longford SFC final earlier this month.

A teacher in Moate Community School who lives in Athlone, Peter gave distinguished service to his club Bunbrosna for many years and also played for Westmeath.

Tormey has also gained a huge amount of experience in coaching and management despite still playing with his club up until quite recently. Peter helped to guide Moate CS to the Leinster Schools SF 'A' final on two occasions, with the Westmeath side losing out to St Peter's, Wexford and Naas CBS in 2017 and 2023 respectively.

He was again part of the Moate CS management this year, though they were knocked out of the Br Bosco Cup last week.

Tormey was a coach with the Westmeath U-20 team under Damien Gavin and he has also managed Gavin’s club, St Mary's, Rochfortbridge. Rhode (across the border in Offaly) is another club he has been associated with.

At inter-county level, Peter was part of Anthony Cunningham's management team with Roscommon, and he was involved with Tipperary senior footballers this year alongside manager Niall Fitzgerald. Tormey was previously part of the Clare football set-up under former Kerry boss Peter Keane.

In advance of the recent Longford senior decider, Clonguish manager Dom Corrigan praised the impact of Tormey on the squad.

"Peter Tormey has been a fantastic coach and he is involved at county level. Peter is really enjoying it here and he is top class and the players have really bought into what Peter is bringing to the table,” Fermanagh native Corrigan told the Longford Leader.

With home advantage on their side in tomorrow's AIB Leinster Club SFC first round at TEG Cusack Park (throw-in 2pm), The Downs are regarded as strong favourites, but Clonguish and Tormey will be hoping to spring a surprise.
