A Fun Run for the whole family!

Mullingar Harriers are joining up with International Service Ireland (ISI) to host an Ability Fun Run on Sunday, September 19 for the second year in a row, to fundraise for those living with disabilities in Burkino Faso - the fourth poorest country in the world according to the UN.One of the main organisers behind the 5k race which is to take place in Belvedere House and Gardens, is Bobby Begley of Mullingar Harries, who said he was delighted to be associated with the Fun Run again this year:“Even though Ireland is experiencing extremely tough times at the moment, its important not to forget the plight of others who are far worse off and proceeds from this event will help in a very tangible way” said Bobby.Another local man and Director of ISI, Aidan Leavy said due to the phenomenal success of last year’s event, this year looks set to be even bigger and better.“We had 140 runners taking part last year who all really enjoyed it and raised almost €5,000 on the day, which was really exciting” said Aidan. “This year, we want to build on that success, and continue to raise money to support people with disabilities in West Africa.” Aidan went on to stress that the Fun Run is focused on family, so young and old alike can enjoy the day:“It’s really an event for the whole family to enjoy, whether you want to run, hop, skip or walk the five kilometers, you can decide, there’s no pressure” he added. There will also be face painting, clowns and music on the day.All proceeds will go towards developing small businesses for people with disabilities in Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa.“Polio and meningitis have yet to be eradicated in Burkina Faso which contributes to a high number of people having some form of disability - about 15% of the whole population. So we provide people with basic management training and the financial means to start small businesses so that they can put food on the table and hopefully earn a decent living”, explained Aidan. If you would like to participate, registration costs €25 and that includes the cost of the after-run BBQ. Registration for underage runners is just €10. Sponsorship cards are available in Days Bazaar newsagents and Brian’s Treasure Chest in Mullingar. The run will start at 11am and prizes made by women with disabilities in West Africa will be presented at 1pm.
