Former Christian Brother pleads guilty to indecent assault charges

A former Christian Brother who taught in St Mary’s CBS primary school in Mullingar more than 20 years ago has pleaded guilty to six charges of indecently assaulting two young boys at the school.

Thomas McCarry, currently residing at ‘Clareville’, 89 A, Finglas Road, Glasnevin appeared before Judge Tony Hunt at a sitting of Mullingar Circuit Court in Tullamore yesterday (Tuesday).

Mr McCarry, who was represented by Sheehan and Partners Solicitors, replied ‘guilty’ when the six charges were put to him. They related to incidents involving two young boys, which occurred on unknown dates in the late 1980s.

On behalf of the state, John Hayden, BL, instructed by Peter D Jones, State Solicitor, requested that the case be adjourned for sentencing on September 30 next.

Judge Hunt ordered that victim impact statements be prepared and should be available to the court on that date.

Mr McCarry is also facing further prosecutions in relation to similar incidents, involving other young males, also allegedly committed during his time as a teacher in Mullingar.
