Aoife Weller from Mullingar, who suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis, will share her experiences at a seminar on the subject on Tuesday April 28.

Did you know half a million people in Ireland suffers from some form of arthritis. There are over 100 types of arthritis. The two most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is one of the most debilitating forms of the condition.

An estimate in 2009 from Arthritis Ireland suggests there may be as many as 40,000 individuals with rheumatoid arthritis in Ireland and that 70% those affected are women. RA can be so debilitating that up to half of people with the condition are unable to work within 10 years of diagnosis.

Following their successful talks over the last year on Osteoarthritis and Fibromyalgia, Whelehans Pharmacy, in conjunction with Arthritis Ireland (Westmeath Branch) are hosting a Rheumatoid Arthritis Information evening next Tuesday April 28 at 7pm in the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar.

Admission is free. Speakers on the night will include Aoife Weller from Mullingar who suffers from RA.

Aoife, 26, was diagnosed with RA at 18. She will discuss the challenges she faces and the various coping strategies she employs to help her best manage the condition. Aoife does work for Arthritis Ireland as secretary of the Westmeath branch and is a leader on its Living Well with Arthritis courses.

Nutritionist Aisling Murray BSc (nutrition) will discuss how diet influences both inflammation and our energy levels (low energy is one of the most debilitating symptoms of RA); Aisling will conclude by offering useful tips and ideas that can you can integrate into your own dietary regime.

Chartered physiotherapist Sinead Brogan, MISCP, will discuss exercises and other methods of improving function and reducing pain and stiffness. The aim of physiotherapy is to reduce pain and stiffness, prevent deformity, maximise function and to improve independence and quality of life. The final speaker will be pharmacist Eamonn Brady MPSI who will discuss the medication used to treat and control Rheumatoid Arthritis.
