Bealtaine celebrations this weekend with Uisneach ceremonial fire

One of the biggest events in the midlands takes place at the Hill of Uisneach to celebrate Bealtaine this Saturday May 5.

The theme this year is ‘The Gathering of the Royal Sites’, where two representatives from each of the four provinces, Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connaught, will gather to light the flame, an honour carried out by President of Ireland Michael D Higgins last year.

The celebration promises to be a nice relaxed evening on top of the summit, deemed to be the burial site of the Earth Goddess Ériu and the Sun God Lugh, and the gateway to the mythical fifth province, Mide.

There will be music provided by Ballynacargy Comhaltas, Mullingar Town Band, the Ukulele Orchestra, plus many more, while ‘A History of the Ringforts of Uisneach’ is one of four talks taking place in the Heritage Tent, between 7pm and 9pm.

A holistic area situated alongside the hilltop lake, Lough Lugh, will host guided meditation and yoga workshops, while a selection local crafts, organic and vegetarian fare, will be available.
The Bealtaine celebrations will continue throughout the May bank holiday weekend at Uisneach.

History, Archaeology and Mythology tours of Uisneach take place on Sunday May 6 at 1pm and 3pm; while Ancient Craft workshops, including traditional stone and wood carving, as well as willow weaving, will take place across the three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 4, 5 and 6.

“We’re really looking forward to this year’s event,” says David Clarke, caretaker of the Hill of Uisneach.

“A huge amount of local volunteerism goes into making this event happen every year, including support from Loughnavalley GAA among many others, and I’d like to thank them for helping us make this happen.

“People come from all corners of the world for this event,” he continues.

“The midlands is a hotbed of musical talent, so that will be showcased on the evening, but we will also be focusing on our heritage, our culture, our mythology and that’s what this celebration is all about.”
