Kilbeggan area meeting

Westmeath County Council will repair the direction arrow on the traffic island opposite Kilbeggan Post Office, a meeting of the Strategic Policy Committee(SPC) in Kilbeggan was told recently.Councillor Ger Corcoran said the direction arrow was very severely cracked and broken.Westmeath County Council"s Director of Services Ray Kenny said the work would be included in the 2009 Routine works Programme.Councillor Corcoran also asked when would work commence at number 13 on the Tullamore Road in Kilbeggan.In response the council said: 'A cost has been prepared by this office and has been forwarded to the Housing Section for inclusion in their Capital Works Programme in 2009. Work will commence next month.'Councillor Paul Daly asked: 'that Westmeath County Council put down footpaths at Ballinagore Village on the eastern side of the Kilbeggan Road at the area known as "Orchard Hill' in the interest of safety of pedestrians and cyclists.'He was told the council would include the location on its list of footpaths.Councillor Daly also asked for cleaning work to be carried out on an area known as the "Circular Road" at Barley Hill in Kilbeggan. 'This is now a common walking route for a lot of people since it has been closed to traffic,' he said.The location would be included in list of locations for council staff, Councillor Daly was told.The council were also asked to consider reducing the speed limit from 80kmh to 50kmh at Tonaphort and along the Relic Road in Kilbeggan. Councillor Ger Corcoran asked the council to look at the speed limits in the interest of safety.'This office will include these locations on a list of proposals for the reduction in speed limits within the county. This is a relatively slow process.The last application for new speed limits occurred in 2006 and was adopted in 2007,' the council said.Mercy Kilbeggan notes - EquestrianCongratulations to Mercy 6th Year Student Ruth Robinson who won the Westmeath Independent Junior Sports Star of the Year 2008 for her exploits in the World of three day eventing. Ruth was a member of the Irish Junior Eventing Team who won a medal at the European Championships in Scotland last summer.SoccerThe Mercy Seconday U19 boys soccer team were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Granard Vocational School in the West Leinster Senior Soccer League last week. This defeat cost them a place in the final which was disapointing as they were hoping to make amends for last years defeat in the final on penalties.FundraisingWell done to a number of Mercy Students who, headed by Craig Arthurs raised 5,460 Euros for Our Lady"s Hospital for sick children in Crumblin. They raised the money by organising a sponsored walk.Councillor welcomes €900,000 allocationAn allocation of €900,000 has been allocated by the Dept of the Environment towards two major road schemes in the Kilbeggan Electoral Area.A sum of €500,000 towards the completion of works at Walderstown Junction and €400,000 for the Clara/Comagh Link Road the Department of the Environment.Councillor Flanagan in welcoming this news has campaigned for years to have these included in its programme of works.As Chairman of the Area Committee he also states that the annual roads meeting will take place shortly in Kilbeggan when the allocation towards county roads will be distributed.
