New postcode system will save lives

The new postcode system will not only make mail delivery more efficient but will also save lives, according to a local postmistress.

This week communications minister Pat Rabbitte announced that a new postcode system will be introduced by 2015 with each property getting its own unique seven digit number.

Rathowen postmistress Lorraine Tormey says that the new system will not only improve An Post's current 94% next day delivery rate, but will also aid emergency services responding to call outs to rural areas.

The news has also been welcomed by Mullingar chamber of commerce president Pat Whelan who says that it will "greatly benefit business".
