Online abuse of election candidates not on, says councillor

More needs to be done to combat the online abuse of election candidates, according to Cllr Johnnie Penrose.

Speaking at the last meeting of the Mullingar Municipal District (MMD), the Labour man said that candidates from across the political spectrum were abused in the run up to the recent general election.

“I think that there should be some sort of regulation put on it to stop derogatory comments.

"Fair play to every politician who put their name forward. It was disgraceful the abuse on it (social media),” Cllr Penrose said.
