Town centre enhancement works 'now substantially complete'

‘Intelligent’ lights switch-on within two weeks

The switch-on of the new “intelligent traffic light system” in Mullingar is moving closer, and the town centre enhancement works are now substantially complete, members of the Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District learned at their October monthly meeting, held yesterday (Monday).

The traffic lights at the Green Bridge and Nugent’s Corner have been upgraded and those at the Dublin Bridge will be done next week.

Fibre optic cable will then be installed in the newly laid ducting, connecting all traffic lights between the Dublin Bridge and the Green Bridge. This work is to be done within the next two weeks.

“When all traffic signals at each junction are connected, new timings will be introduced to operate the new intelligent traffic light system,” councillors were informed.

Area manager for Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District, Pat Keating, revealed that at Dominick Square, at the junction of Castle Street and Pearse Street (north and south), at Blackhall Place and at Market Square, all works are “substantially complete” and over the coming two weeks, snagging repairs are being carried out at those locations.

Also to be undertaken in the next two weeks is the erections of new directional signage.
