Anger mounts as Scragh Bog closed

One of Mullingar’s most popular outdoor amenities has been closed until further notice due to “severe” overcrowding issues in its car park and locals’ concerns about off site car parking causing obstructions.

The Dept of Housing, Local Government and Heritage posted a sign at the entrance to Scragh Bog Nature Reserve at the weekend informing the public that it would close today, Tuesday March 16, “until further notice due to health and safety concerns”.

When contacted by the Westmeath Examiner, the department issued this statement outlining its reasons for closing the site.

“There have been severe issues with visitors overcrowding the existing car-park and also with off-site cars parking on grass verges – causing damage and impacting access for emergency services and causing obstructions for concerned residential road users, including access to land for agriculture use. Assessments into user management at Scragh Bog SAC will have to be undertaken before considering re-opening of this site. NPWS will continue to monitor the situation.”

The news has been met with widespread criticism on social media. Mullingar mother Dearbhla O’Sullivan set up an online petition in a bid to have the decision reversed. At the time of writing the petition had been signed by 180 people.

Ms O’Sullivan posted that the closure of the bog would be a blow to the many who visit it on a regular basis.

“The Scragh Bog is an invaluable amenity to the people of Mullingar. It is a beautiful, wooded area where families can enjoy a walk outdoors and in safety. As an outdoor amenity, it promotes health and well-being.

“Under the current restrictions, and with the closure of Belvedere Gardens, there are limited outdoor public amenities within 5km of Mullingar. The closure of the Scragh Bog would be a huge loss to families and walkers in Mullingar.”

Earlier this month it was announced that Westmeath County Council has been allocated €170,000 to extend a walk and cycle trail link from Cullion-Levington to Scragh Bog. It is believed the closure is not related to works arising from the funding allocation.
