Mullingar Tidy Towns installs new information board at Carey Bridge; and announces two competitions

Mullingar Tidy Towns and historian Jason McKevitt (a member of the group) have highlighted the history of the Carey Bridge, and the new information board is one of many projects the group is working on.

The board is beside the memorial stone dedicated to James Carey, whose vision and dedication brought his dream to fruition, by ensuring safe passage for all pedestrians.

The original Carey Bridge was completed in September 1953 and served for more than 40 years. In summer 1998, Westmeath County Council began construction of a new bridge a few metres north of the original one. It was completed in 1999 at a cost of €52,000.

The double sided information board provides historical details for all to view and Mullingar Tidy Towns volunteers hope it can remind everyone of how their town was built.

Competitions

The national SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition is in full swing and Mullingar Tidy Towns would like to encourage and find ways to reward local groups for their hard work in keeping their areas litter free and for the many other initiatives they have taken on themselves to make improvements to their communities.

As part of the national #LeaveNoTrace Campaign, it is asking people to get involved in a new initiative based on educating, engaging and creativity. There is €500 cash prize for the winning group, so get your thinking caps on. The competition ends on September 30, 2021.

Contact us at Mullingar Tidy Towns, and let us know how you and your group would like to take part. Examples: Displays to encourage people to not litter and to rethink sustainability; litter Incentives – giving people a reason to not litter, to pick up and recycle; educating the public; Nature – biodiversity or gardening projects. Mullingar Chamber of Commerce have sponsored this project.

Mullingar Tidy Towns also has a competition that aims to reward local businesses that have brightened up their premises with flower arrangements.

Mullingar Tidy Towns is finding ways to support and encourage businesses in the town, and also announce its 2021 competition to reward the local businesses who have enhanced their properties and that of the streetscape of Mullingar with flowers and décor.

Mr Collentine said: “We have to say our town is looking pretty amazing and we at Mullingar Tidy Towns, as well as Mullingar Chamber and Slanemore Nursery, would like to reward some of those businesses. We would like to thank all of the businesses who have gone to great lengths to have their properties looking so well.

“Over the next few weeks our judges will be our and about taking photos and winners and runner-ups will be announced in early September.”

The efforts businesses make also help Mullingar in the Tidy Towns Competitions. If you know of a business that has gone to great lengths in enhancing its premises, let us know by tagging them on social media and we will ensure our judges make their way there. Prizes are sponsored by Mullingar Tidy Towns; Mullingar Chamber; and Slanemore Nursery.
