Progress on new bus stops for The Downs and Rochfortbridge

Plans for improved public transport infrastructure in Westmeath took a step forward this month, and updates on proposed bus stops for The Downs and Rochfortbridge were presented at the July meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.

In The Downs, plans for two new bus stops are progressing after the National Transport Authority (NTA) confirmed its support and indicated that services on the 190 and 115C routes could operate from the location.

The update came in response to a question from Cllr Aoife Davitt, who highlighted the area’s growing population and said the proposed stops would provide a safer and more accessible travel option, especially for younger residents.

Cllr Davitt noted that the council had received €500,000 for bus stop provision and suggested that if other planned locations fall through, funding could be redirected to The Downs.

District Engineer Pat Kavanagh explained that while the council is ready to proceed, construction has been delayed due to supply issues with the NTA’s contractor, but progress is expected in the next phase of works.

In Rochfortbridge, a new eastbound bus stop and shelter near the Spar shop could soon become a reality following a proposal from Cllr Denis Leonard.

He said the measure is essential to improve safety and eliminate a dangerous parking situation that has led to “several near misses.”

Cllr Leonard acknowledged the shelter would displace a few front parking spaces but argued that there is ample parking behind the building. The council confirmed it has contacted the property owner and is now examining suitable locations nearby for the shelter.
