People killed in Málaga accident yesterday are from Mullingar area

The people involved in a fatal traffic accident near Málaga in southern Spain yesterday morning are from the Mullingar area, it is understood.

Three of those travelling in one of the cars involved have died and another is seriously injured.

The crash happened at around 2.30am on Sunday on the A7 motorway east of Málaga.

Two women and a man were declared dead at the scene.

A woman, aged 64, and a man, aged 35, were injured in the crash, and the man was taken to hospital in Málaga.

It is understood one of the cars plunged some 30 metres down a steep embankment.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it is aware of the incident in Spain, and is providing consular assistance to the families involved. “The department does not comment on the specifics of individual cases.”

Speaking on Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1, Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Robert Troy, paid his respects to those involved.

Minister Troy is from Ballynacargy, where one of the families are from.

“I know one of the families quite well. I spoke to them yesterday, and needless to say, they’re absolutely devastated. It’s the worst of phone calls to get.

“They only went on holidays at the end of last week, and to get this call yesterday evening was was heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with that family, and all families that are affected.”
