Malone claims National Junior Strokeplay title at Kilbeggan
Kilbeggan Pitch and Putt Club took centre stage on Saturday, August 8, when it hosted the 2026 Gents Junior National Strokeplay Championship, one of the most prestigious events on the national pitch and putt calendar.
The Westmeath club was awarded the honour of hosting the championship by the National Executive Committee, marking a proud milestone for Kilbeggan. Months of preparation went into ensuring the course was presented in immaculate condition, with competitors facing a demanding test over 54 holes.
A total of 80 players contested the championship, with the opening group teeing off at 8.30am and the second wave beginning at 12.30pm. Fine weather added to the occasion as the competitors battled for national honours.
Among the local representatives were Kilbeggan players Mick Cunningham and Lee Stynes. While neither was able to progress to the latter stages both could be proud of competing in such an elite field.
After the opening 54 holes, the leading 20 players advanced to an additional 18-hole round. Two Westmeath players, Danny Molloy and Danny Malone, made the cut and were well placed to challenge for the title.
It was Malone who ultimately rose to the occasion, producing an impressive final round to claim the 2026 National Gents Junior Strokeplay Championship. Malone, an associate member of Kilbeggan Pitch and Putt Club, was warmly welcomed as the club’s latest national champion.
Speaking afterwards, Mick Cunningham said the club was delighted with Mr Malone’s success: “On Saturday last we were honoured to host the 2026 National Junior Strokeplay event,” he said. “The beautiful weather added to what was a momentous occasion for our club. From the first two-ball at 8.30am to the final round, our course saw some delightful pitch and putt.”
Mr Cunningham also praised the efforts of club members who helped stage the major championship, saying the event had been a “great and successful day”.
He reserved special thanks for Patricia McCarthy of neighbouring Rochfortbridge for her tremendous assistance.
The successful staging of the championship represents a significant achievement for Kilbeggan Pitch and Putt Club, while Malone’s victory provided a fitting finale to an important day for Westmeath pitch and putt.
